With a weak economy, poor contract enforcement, and an increasingly diverse UPS (ie. freight, cartage, logistics, etc) how can I encourage member involvement to work for better conditions for all UPS Teamsters? Part-time, Full-time, Combination workers, etc.

I feel this message board is a great idea. I hope people use it to find out what's going on in other places. Information is the greatest tool an employee has.

A majority of UPS workers are part-timers and they are the ones who could have the most impact if they knew the contract language and what issues were going on. They need to know that their local business agents aren't doing their job and that part-timers have the most power, come election time, to vote out deadbeat business agents. The Union needs to be threatened with job loss, but not many people bother voting (especially part-timers) because they just don't know what's going on. They haven't been around as long as the full-timers. I've been thinking about putting together a newsletter and leaving copies of it the breakroom, and handing it out at work to get the whole building aware of the situation that we are in, and what we can do about it to make change happen. I might simply put out a flyer saying something like "Fight for Your Rights at UPS" or "Make UPS Honor the Contract", with the www.upsadvice.org website address in bold letters!

When I get my Convoy, I usually pass the Convoy around to different individuals that gets them to talking. I would love to stand outside work one day and just give away 200 to 300 Convoys. There are people at work as mentioned by jwbs that just do not know especially part timers. I would not just look to vote out dead beat business agents but dead beat presidents of locals.

Thanks for the feed back. Might be a good idea to put some local issues together on a one page flyer and pass out with the convoy. Get some local issues affecting the different employee classifications and get them communicating. Could possibly use text messages or e-mail, too. Any other feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I do a local newsletter that seems to be working out great. It's starting to build solidarity among the drivers. I use articles from different ups/teamster websites and have our stewards author articles. I even have a safety tip section that promotes safe work habits. Its a good way to get younger members involved since its so hard to get them to go to the Union meetings.
